AI Web Traffic Analysis

The venture capital firm a16z conducted an analysis of web traffic data pertaining to the leading AI consumer products, as part of a comprehensive examination into the economics of generative AI. Here are the key findings:

  1. ChatGPT is currently the undisputed leader, commanding a commanding 60% share of all web traffic. In contrast, Character.ai lags significantly behind in second place in terms of usage.

  2. The remainder of the top 10 includes Bard, Poe, QuillBot, Photoroom, Civitai, Midjourney, Hugging Face, and Perplexity.

  3. Interestingly, a substantial number of “GPT wrappers” made their way into the top 50. This category exhibited a relatively equal distribution among proprietary models, fine-tuned open-source models, and publicly available third-party models.

  4. Despite the considerable hype surrounding AI products like ChatGPT, it’s essential to note that even the most prominent AI products remain relatively small in comparison to mainstream applications like YouTube and Facebook.

Why this matters: The dominance of ChatGPT in the AI product landscape is remarkable. However, the analysis underscores the significance of understanding its scale when compared to the largest mainstream consumer applications. While AI appears to be ubiquitous, these statistics emphasize that we are still in the early stages of its development and adoption.

In January 2023, ChatGPT experienced a significant surge in popularity, attracting an average of 13 million unique visitors daily. This marked a remarkable increase, more than doubling the daily visitor count from December 2022. Over the past month, the site’s traffic has displayed steady growth, with an average daily increase of 3.4%.

Moving into February, ChatGPT continued to draw a massive audience, estimating approximately 1 billion visitors in total for the month, equating to an average of over 35 million visitors per day.

However, come May, ChatGPT’s popularity soared even further, amassing an estimated 1.85 billion visitors. The numbers dipped slightly in June to 1.66 billion visitors, averaging around 55 million daily visitors. Notably, this marked the first instance of a month-on-month decline in site traffic.

Additionally, visitors to the OpenAI website exhibited an engaging browsing pattern, exploring an average of 6.22 pages per visit. The typical visit lasted an average of 8 minutes and 24 seconds.

Traffic to the ChatGPT webpage comes from a number of sources, with the top source being direct traffic at 69.43%, and the second most popular being referral traffic at 19.97%.
